MABRY MILL
Mabry Mill is one of the most popular attractions on the Blue Ridge Parkway providing visitors with a first-hand view of rural life at the turn of the century. Constructed in 1903 as a blacksmith and wheelwright shop by Patrick Countian Edwin Mabry, the operation was soon expanded to include both a sawmill and a gristmill. Farmers from surrounding Patrick, Carroll and Floyd Counties brought wheat and corn to Mabry Mill to be ground into flour and cornmeal. Visitors can see the original horizontal millstones, the water-powered wheel that turned the stones, and the millrace that directed the water over the wheel. In addition to the mill, other buildings and artifacts of rural life are on display including a sorghum mill, whiskey still and working blacksmith shop. Cornmeal and flour ground at the mill are available in the gift shop. Mabry Mill, located at milepost 176 on the Blue Ridge Parkway, is one of the most photographed and painted scenic sites in the United States.
